Na al de positieve webkanten van Nederland en Amsterdam is het tijd
om eens rond ons heen te kijken uit meer kritische en reëlere doppen.
Er is Pret, er is Kunst, er is Slim Dom, er is Dom Dom, er zijn Plannen,
er zijn Uitdrukkingen, er zijn Fijnsten, er zijn niet-zo-Fijnsten .
Dit alles is  de Nederlander.

Sinds 1990 begon ik als hobby in bibliotheken door oude en nieuwe gezegden- en woordenboeken te bladeren op zoek naar expressies
met woorden zoals Dutch en Hollands.
Ik heb ze een paar jaren later op mijn eerste website gepubliceerd. Sindsdien breid ik deze uit met andere nederlands gerelateerde feiten en meningen.

We Dutch have our extreme-Righteous and Complacency side (our Dutch uncle) which we all the time successfully get into the news. But besides that there is the passion of Pioneering, the Adventure, Inventiveness, Down-to-earth and last but not least our famous as well as notorious Traders mentality. All this may explain the amazing amount of influence this small “race” of people have and had on the world. Here below a hotchpotch.

Wij Hollanders hebben onze extreem-Rechtvaardige en Zelfgenoegzame zijde (onze dutch uncle) welke we keer op keer succesvol in het nieuws krijgen. Daarnaast hebben we ook onze Pioniersdrift, Avontuurszin, Inventiviteit, Nuchterheid en niet te vergeten onze zowel beroemde als beruchte Handelsgeest. Dit allemaal zijn mogelijke verklaringen voor de verbazende invloed dat zo’n klein “ras” op deze wereld had en heeft. Hieronder een samenraapsel.

Some American fairy tales with Dutch characters are not at all known in the Netherlands. So is the little boy who puts his finger in the dike to stop it from leaking NOT named Hans Brinker.

In sommige buitenlandse sprookjes komen Nederlandse karakters voor die hier totaal onbekend zijn. Zo heet het jongetje dat zijn vinger in de dijk stak om het water tegen te houden NIET Hans Brinker.

Multi Culture / Multi Kultureel

Since some years the term allochtoon is in use in the Netherlands. In the beginning it was simply meaning, according to the Van Dale, “van elders afkomstig” (coming from somewhere else, geological).

Sinds enige tijd wordt de term allochtoon in Nederland gebezigd, wat in het begin volgens Van Dale gewoon van elders afkomstig betekende.

Us vs Them / Wij vs Zij

The Dutch are still behaving like colonials.
The difference is that we used to export the Dutch language to all kind of foreign countries, and now we create small communities in our own country, each with its own language and culture.

Wij Nederlanders blijven ons koloniaal gedragen.
Het verschil is echter dat we vroeger de Nederlandse taal exporteerden naar allerlei buitenlanden en dat we nu in eigen land buitenlandjes creëren, ieder met de eigen taal.

Om haar nieuwe videocamera te promoten adverteerde Sony in dagblad De Telegraaf van november 1986 onder de aanhef: “Met de Sony Video 8 pro en wat schoensmeer kunt u nu concurreren met de populairste televisie-serie”.

The term Nepotism is specially invented for us.

The Dutch translation for “service” is not “dienst”, but “favor”:
iemand een dienst bewijzen = to do someone a favor.

Het Nederlandse “dienst” betekent niet “service”, maar “gunst”:
daarom de vaak onwelwillendheid van overheidsdiensten.

De term ‘Nepotisme’ is speciaal voor ons uitgevonden.

Eternal Optimism / Eeuwig Optimisme

We have an eternal optimistic attitude, even with establishing priorities. Safety and environmental precautions, emergency plans and exits are only useful in disastrous incidents. Those are accidents and in our opinion we cannot and will not do much about it to avoid them from happening.

We hebben een eeuwig optimistische instelling, zo ook met het stellen van prioriteiten. Voorzorgs-, milieu- en veiligheidsmaatregelen, noodplannen en nooduitgangen hebben slechts nut bij noodlottige gebeurtenissen. Het zijn ongelukken en we vinden dat we er verder weinig aan kunnen en zullen doen ter voorkoming ervan.
